Idly kindling in the cold,

Slowly creep the Summer months

Bathe the gloom and warm my soul.

Lifts us up, on heel we cling

Like a spiral shooting from the snow

Colour bursts, the air it sings,

Flocking, dancing

In the glow.

Our spirits free to touch the yonder,

Soaring, roaring in the blue

Horizon beckons as we ponder

The thoughts that clung to stones we threw

~

Which waltz on water with silver shimmer

Hearts glide and dance with every wave,

Of golden, hazy lifting glimmer

The memories of such joys we save.

Downwards to the ground,
Till the final amber flake
Turns the tide without a sound.


Then suddenly you’re all a-fumble,
Numb hands jingling for the key
Rush through the door, ears red and sore
To huddle round a pot of tea.


From out the window stretches wide
A spare, unspritely place
That makes you wonder why Autumn leaves
Fell from Summer with such pace.


Each leaf was once a tiny portrait
Of a memory born and lost
Now by December in silver tint
A sculpture made of frost.

The leaves start to fall by the dozen.

Scarves start to wrap rather swiftly,

Then you see people walking more briskly.


The sunset is suddenly sneaky,

It’s haste lends the evenings less balm

The pathways are littered with lost invitations,

The apple tree’s dropped all it’s charms.


The city masquerades as a village,

In burnt umber it now seems quite twee

You recall a long kiss on a bright Summer beach

As we sit by a sycamore tree.


Frost tip-toes on steps, moss nestles b’tween cracks,

Acorns scatter, a cheeky breeze blows

A lone willow weeps for a past summer love,

Where they’ve gone only Autumn will know.
